At the age of 77, Bob Hallinen, was found dead in hospice care. The 77-year-old was battling aggressive cancer and found himself undergoing brain surgery earlier this month before succumbing to his illness.
It was already known that his time was limited, with his daughter, Rhiannon Calkins, saying “he was not gonna get better, he was only going to get worse.”
Hallinen managed to balance his work at Anchorage Daily News, which spanned 33 years, and parenting his children. Despite being on assignments frequently, he still found time to spend with his family.
Even co-workers sung his praises, like photo editor Anne Raup, who believed Hallinen “just loved to make beautiful images.” His work has been seen across a lot of ADN’s work, from local celebrations to tragedies to former President Barrack Obama visiting rural Alaska.
Now, Hallinen hasn’t been with the paper since 2018, but his works have continued to make their way onto the pages even beyond its prime.
